Too Many Kisses?

As you know, a stomach flu bug just swept through our home.
It started with 5 kids getting it during the night, all within a couple of hours.
Because the 2 little boys (Josiah & Jaden) were still healthy and I really hoped they did not get this awful bug, I asked all those who were sick to keep their distance from them. No hugging, no sharing cups and especially...NO KISSES!

Well a couple of days later everyone was in the family room and Josiah suddenly came down with dreaded bug and threw up all over the floor. I was quite amazed with Mikaya and how being around the mess didn't seem to affect her at all. She was right there, taking it all in. I could tell her little wheels inside that head were turning. Then she said so softly and sweetly, "Did we give him too many kisses?"

Did you Know......

That old people have crunchy faces?

At least that's what Brooke told Mark the other night.
She was taking off his sock and he said,
"Don't take off my sock....
Old people don't like to put their socks back on."
And Brooke said to him,
"You're not old....
you don't have a crunchy face!"
So there you have it.
If you wake up one day and your face feels crunchy....
it's because you are old!!!!

Converstation Between 2 Brothers

Caleb: (picking up his baby brother) Oh my baby...my baby!

Nathan:  He's not your baby, he's mom's baby. She laid him!

Guess that's what happens when you have laying hens :)

Do They Grow?

The other day Nathan was so pleased when he picked eggs and found a tiny little one. He announced to me that he was going to have it for breakfast the next day. I was rather surprised when he didn't ask to eat it for breakfast the next day or the next.... Then a couple of days ago he was staring at the tiny egg that was sitting in the bowl with some larger ones. He looked at me with a rather concerned look and said, "My egg isn't growing yet!" Then I understood why he was waiting to eat it. He was looking forward to a bigger meal :)

New Question

You would think after being a parent for 19+ years you would have heard every question by now and know how to answer them. But today Brooke came up with a new one as we were playing with Josiah. She asked, "Is he a she or is she a he?"
I was stumped :) How would you answer this?

Good for a Chuckle

We were grocery shopping the other day and I put a big chunk of ham in my cart.
Thinking it was bologna Zachary asked, "Does bologna grow in the garden."
After Megan and I laughed hysterically I got my composure, apologized to Zachary for laughing at him and then said, "Actually no bologna doesn't grow in the garden. And anyway, this is ham." To this Zach very seriously (a little puzzled at why we would laugh so hard at him making the simple mistake of calling ham bologna) replied, "Oh, well then does ham grow in the garden?" Can you tell that we don't raise pigs? Just the thought of growing pigs in the garden makes me kind of chuckle, you know? Guess it would be good fertilizer!
Brooke was helping me in the kitchen the other day when she looked at me and declared, "When I grow up I'm going to be a mommy, and you will be a mommy and then we can be mommies together!" To which I replied, "I would like that a lot :)" Awww...little girl you know how to melt a mommy's heart!
The younger ones were chorusing (translation: singing together at the top of their lungs) the song, "O be careful little eyes what you see, O be careful little eyes what you see, for the Father up above is looking down in love, O be careful little eyes what you see. O be careful little feet".....there was a slight pause as they tried to think of the words......Then it came to Nathan...."O be careful little feet what you step on...." I can tell already he is going to be a songwriter :)
What funny/cute/hilarious or all of the above things have your blessings said lately?

Things Aren't Always As They Seem

I have been spending many hours in the combine the last little while.
The weather this fall has been very rainy and cloudy, so when it is sunny
we go will all the man (woman:) power we have.
So this year I get to drive the big green machine (John Deere for those
of you who are not farmers:)
Every day I have some little ones to keep me company.
It changes from day to day, sometimes from hour to hour.
But I am glad they come with me and that I can still spend time
with them in this busy season.
One day when Jesse was with me Mark informed me over the 2 way radio
that I might want to try to go down the next row backwards.
For those of my friends who are not farmers I will explain.
It is easiest for a combine to pick up a swath the way it was swathed.
If you don't, we call it going backwards down a row.
It sometimes doesn't work so well.
Am I making any sense?
So anyways, when Mark told me to try going backwards down
the row Jesse had this funny look on his face.
He looked at me and laughed, "It won't work to combine backwards.
The combine won't work if you go backwards!"
He was thinking Mark was telling me to drive in reverse down the row :)
It's moments like this that bring a light into a busy day,
a smile to a mamma's face.
So I want to know.
What have your kids said lately?
You know, those funny moments that just make you smile.
Maybe I can print out your comments and get Caleb to
read them to me in the combine tomorrow.
See if you can keep me entertained all day:)
Even if I don't know you, if you've been reading but haven't commented.
I'd love to hear from all of you.

Words From the Innocent

We work very hard at teaching our kids to be modest at a very young age.
They are taught to keep doors closed when changing and respect other people's privacy.
We also teach them to dress modestly in a manner that would bring glory to God.
This is why Brooke was so distraught one day while we were shopping.
Brooke and I were in Wal-Mart.
I was looking through a rack of clothes close to the fitting rooms.
Brooke: (gasping & pointing towards the fitting rooms) Mommy, he's not wearing a shirt.
So naturally I looked around to see what she was talking about.
Looking in the aisle of the fitting room I saw who she was talking about.
The 'he' was actually a 'she' trying on a bikini swim suit and 'not very discreetly' admiring herself in the mirror.
Me: That's not good, is it?
Brooke: No, he's not even in the bathroom.
Me: She should be in the bathroom.
Brooke: (turning away) I shouldn't be looking, I should be looking at the clothes.
Me: Yes, you look over here at the clothes!
As cute as this is, it is also very sad.
We live in an age where the standard of modesty is declining.
We went to the beach the other day and I felt like putting blind folds on our boys.
It is now the acception to wear a full bathing suit rather than the norm.
Bikinis are everywhere!
When we go shopping for clothes we find there are actually very few modest items that are even worth considering. And modest bathing suits are next to impossible to find.
Being in style is not worth compromising modesty.
When we get to heaven and stand before God, He is not going to ask us if we were in style with the latest trends. He is going to ask us about our inward beauty. How much time & effort did we spend on keeping that looking beautiful.
What are you teaching your children about modesty?
How are you dressing?
Ask your husband if your dress is modest. As women we do not see things the way men do. If your husband thinks it is 'immodest' chances are it will draw other men's attention as well.
Teach your daughters to ask their Dad if he approves of their clothing. If our girls have bought something new, even though I have given the okay, before they take the tags off, they need to model it for their Dad. And if he does not approve, we take it back. Even their hair style or their accesories can give a wrong message.
I once read in a book once that the way you should judge if you are dressing modestly is to look in the mirror and instead of asking yourself if you look good, ask yourself if what you are wearing would please your Heavenly Father. Would He give you his nod of approval?
Are you teaching your children that it's the beauty on the inside that is the most important?
You can start even when they are young.
I don't let our little girls wear mini skirts or bikinis.
Why let them do something today that you will discourage tomorrow?
Sometimes it feels like an uphill battle.
Like swimming against the stream.
But it is possible to live modestly in an immodest society.
I have to tell you one more story about Nathan in regards to this topic.
Megan was trying on a pair of shorts to wear to the beach as a swim suit bottom.
Nathan came in the house when she had them on.
He said passionately, "Megan, it's not your property to wear shorts like that!"
As a child he was sensitive to this, it bothered him.
It's naturally there, don't desensitize your children, keep your standard high.
Don't measure yourself against the world.
Measure yourself according to God and His Word.
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel,
with shamefacedness and sobriety;
not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Timothy 2:9 & 10

Thumb Sucking

Did you know horses suck their thumbs?
That's what Brooke informed us the other day at the Morris Stampede !?!
Personally I think she is just trying to make herself feel better
as she still likes to suck her thumb quite frequently :)
Well I am not buying it!
By the way,
this is our horse

Rain, Rain

Here was the conversation I heard between Jesse (5) and Nathan(4) a few mornings ago.
First let me say Jesse is a real outside boy and loves to go with his dad to the field. And anything that gets in the way of that disturbs him greatly.

Jesse (Left): (sounding very distressed) Oh no, it's raining!

Nathan (Right): (in the cutest, most consoling voice ever) Don't worry Jesse. We need the rain to water our garden and the field so the seeds can grow.

It Cracked Me Up

Here was a converstion between Zachary & Brooke today.
Zachary: Brooke you have a crack in your pants. (Meaning a butt crack) Brooke: No, I didn't crack my pants!

CONVERSATIONS AROUND THE TABLE

Yesterday morning as our 4 youngest sons were finishing up breakfast this was the conversation: Boy #1- No, the youngest in our family is the baby in mommy’s tummy! (At this point my ears perked up) Boy #2- There’s a baby in mommy’s tummy? Boy #3 – How do you know that? Boy # 1- Every mommy has a baby in their tummy. Boy #3- What about mommies who never have babies. Boy #1- Could I have jam on my toast please. Remember the days when life was so simple?
