A Precious Moment On The Farm

I know we have posted a lot about calving season already, but you must understand that right now it consumes much of our days :) Calving season always makes life on the farm much more busy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything! It is so fun and rewarding to see these cows give birth to their little babies and take care of them. There is just something special about new life and spring that makes your heart feel good! We are now up to 11 calves. Last year Jen, Meg and Kerri learned the ropes of calving and this year they have basically done all the calving work so far, except for the tagging and castrating. They are doing an excellent job and we are so proud of how responsible they have been. It's such a blessing to have good help around which frees Mark and I up to be able to concentrate on other things. Thanks girls, we love you! We have heard comments over the last little while that some of you would like to see a cow giving birth to a calf. Well, since you can't be here to see it, we thought we would give you the next best thing....a video! So if you don't like to see cows giving birth, THEN DON'T WATCH THIS VIDEO :) But if you would like to....ENJOY! This is our cow "Calfy" (well she was a calf when we named her this:) She is part Holstein. We have milked her on and off over the last few years before we got our Jersey cows. She is a sweet and stubborn cow all in one! The video that you will see was taken in a span of about 5 hours. About 3 hours from her water breaking until she gave birth to this little sweet heifer calf. And within about 2 hours from birth she was up and drinking from Mama (with a little help from Jen.) You will see Kerri pulling the calf out, we will do this sometimes if the birth has been long or the calf's head has been out for awhile. This was an easy pull, so she probably would have been fine on her own. But when you are standing there watching, it's hard not to help her out :) And if you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in a comment and we will try our best to answer them. Now for the video!

And Calving has Begun! (By: Megan)

This morning at 10am we had our first calf of the season. It is always a very exciting time when we start calving. And today some even got to watch them being born.
It's a girl! This is April and her new calf....Jen, Kerri, Jesse and Caleb were watching and waiting for this calf to be born while I was inside helping mom with brunch. I kept running in and out hoping I would see it being born but I misssed the birth by half a minute :(

I guess she dosn't like her picture taken...LOL!

And while Jen and I were checking on the new arrival we saw this...
Yep, another calf was ready to be born! And I wasn't about to miss this one! Here you can see just the hooves coming out.

Now you can see the head..

Here's Jennifer helping her out by grabbing the legs and giving a slight tug. This one probably would have had the calf fine on her own, but Jen can't stand not to help :) Sometimes, not very often though, we will have a calf that gets stuck and we have to put strings on it's legs and pull quite hard. Thankfully this cow had no problems!
It's another girl! Meet Bellar (affectionately named so because of the low, growling bellar she serenades us with every time she has a calf, at first it was kind of intimidating, but now we know that's just what she does and that she means no harm) and her sweet calf. She looks kind of lifeless right now, but as soon as she realizes she is free she will be trying her best to get up
Some of the other cows greeting the new arrival. I guess they can hardly wait until they have their own calf to lick off :-)

Isn't she a sweet, slippery looking thing? :) Her mother will soon have her all licked off and looking just as clean as can be!

So this has been the happenings on the Pauls' farm today..within a couple of hours, two brand new calves.

And this is just the beginning. There are LOTS more to come!

Updates....

I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who have been praying for me since I posted this request. I am so thankful for each and every one of you who have said that you hold up our family daily in your prayers and I am once again overwhelmed and so grateful for our friends and fellow believers from far and near.

The baby is doing great as far as I can tell. We have heard a strong healthy heartbeat a couple of times. That's always so nice to hear :) I have been feeling more and more movement the last couple of days as the little arrow is letting me know he/she is in there! Sometimes it catches me off guard as in the busyness of life I often forget that I am even pregnant :) (I think those of you who have many children will know what I am saying!) But that little flutter brings a smile to my face and a feeling of LOVE to my heart for this dear, precious little life.

My blood pressure has been staying in the normal range. My Dr. has agreed to continue to let me monitor it at home, while continuing care with my midwife. And if it would happen to go up again then I would have shared care between her and my midwife. I can't tell you how grateful I am to the Lord for sending a Dr. to us that is so caring, not to mention reasonable. She has been a HUGE blessing to us. And have I ever told you how wonderful my midwife is? Well.....SHE IS :)

On another note, we are enjoying have Josh, Rebecca and baby Andrew home with us again. What a special little sweetie he is. It has been such a joy to cuddle and love on him. He is doing well, growing, and becoming more and more alert every day. He was scheduled to have hernia surgery this past Tuesday, but he has a cold so they postponed it until a later date. Please pray for him, that he would get over this cold quickly and be able to fight off the other germs he comes in contact with.

And just so you can take a peak at the little bundle that we get to cuddle with, here's a video of little Andrew taken last week. He's already changed a lot since then....but he's just as cute :)

Say High to the Boy :)

Every once in awhile the excitement on the farm is getting a new piece of machinery. Such was the case last week when this was delivered to our yard.

For our friends who are not farmers, this interesting machine is called a high boy sprayer. And even though spraying crops is our least favorite thing about farming, it is a necessary part of growing them. We spray for many things like bugs that want to eat away our plants, to pesky weeds that threaten to choke out our crops and diseases that threaten to cut down our yields. It was HIGH time for a newer sprayer and this BOY is going to make things a lot easier and will also eliminate the need of hiring others to do spraying for us :)

.

All of our boys were very excited as they had been waiting a long time for this exciting delivery. As soon as the word came that the delivery was at the end of our lane they threw on their winter gear as fast as they could and were out there to look it over.

Of course everyone had to have a test drive! How many kids can you fit in a tiny little cab? In our family.....quite a few :)

And of course our photographer had to take pictures from every angle :)
So there you have it.....the newest addition to our farm machinery.
